There is something about darkness that captures our attention. Especially during this time of year, imagery of darkness, fear, and the unknown becomes more visible. Halloween, in many ways, leans into that fascination—costumes, shadows, mystery, and things that are meant to unsettle us. But as believers, we are not called to live in fear of darkness. We are called to live in the light. In John, chapter 1, verse 5, we are reminded:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Darkness may exist—but it does not win. There are different kinds of darkness we encounter in life. Not just the symbolic or seasonal kind, but real moments of fear, uncertainty, temptation, and spiritual struggle. Times when things feel heavy. Times when clarity feels distant. And in those moments, it can be easy to focus on the darkness itself. But God never calls us to fix our attention there. He calls us to focus on the light. Jesus himself said in John, chapter 8, verse 12:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
That is a powerful promise. It doesn’t say darkness won’t exist—but it does say we don’t have to walk in it. Following Jesus means we carry light into places that feel dark. It means we respond differently. Think differently. Live differently. While the world may be drawn to fear, we are anchored in truth. While others may play with darkness, we are called to reflect light. This doesn’t mean we isolate ourselves or withdraw from the world. It means we engage it differently—with discernment, with awareness, and with a clear understanding of who we are in Christ. We don’t belong to the darkness. We belong to the light. There may be moments in your life that feel dark—not because of a holiday or a season, but because of what you’re walking through. Fear, confusion, doubt, or struggle can feel overwhelming. But even there, the light still shines. And darkness cannot overcome it. So I encourage you, in this season and in every season, to be mindful of where your focus is. Not just what you see around you—but what you allow into your heart and mind. Choose light. Choose truth. Choose to walk in the presence of the one who has already overcome the darkness.

Darkness may exist, but it does not define you. The light of Christ does. And that light is stronger than anything you will face. Let us walk confidently in that truth, knowing that no darkness can overcome what God has already illuminated.
