Return to Your First Love

There is something powerful about the beginning of a relationship with God. A sense of excitement. A hunger to know him more. A desire to spend time in his presence, to read his word, and to grow. But over time, it is possible for that passion to fade. Life becomes busy. Responsibilities increase. Distractions multiply. What once felt vibrant can begin to feel routine. Our time with God may become less consistent, less intentional, or even overlooked altogether. In Revelation, chapter 2, verse 4, God speaks to this very issue when addressing the church of Ephesus. It says:

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.”

This is a call to return. A call to remember what it was like when your relationship with God was fresh and alive. When your desire to seek him was strong, not out of obligation, but out of love. It is easy to drift without realizing it. To slowly become distant, not through a single decision, but through a series of small ones. Missed moments. Delayed priorities. Quiet compromises. But the good news is this: God has not moved. He is still there. Still present. Still inviting you back. Returning to your first love does not require perfection. It requires intention. It may start with something simple—setting aside time to pray, opening your Bible, or creating space to be still before God. It may feel small at first, but those moments matter. They reconnect your heart. There may be times when you don’t feel the same passion you once did. But passion often follows pursuit. As you begin to seek God again, your desire for him grows. So I encourage you to reflect. Has your relationship with God become distant or routine? Have other things taken priority over your time with him? If so, don’t feel discouraged. Instead, take it as an invitation.

God is always ready to receive you. His invitation is constant. When we return to him, we rediscover the joy, the peace, and the connection that we may have lost along the way. Let us not settle for distance when closeness is available. Let us return to our first love.
