Gratitude has the power to transform the way we see our lives. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, from what is wrong to what God is doing right in front of us. It is easy to be thankful when things are going well. When prayers are answered and life feels stable, gratitude comes naturally. But what about when life is difficult? What about when things don’t go as planned? Scripture challenges us with this perspective in 1 Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 18:
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Notice that it does not say to give thanks for all circumstances, but in all circumstances. That means even in hardship, even in uncertainty, even in pain—we are called to be thankful. Gratitude in difficult seasons is an act of faith. It is choosing to believe that God is still good, even when life is hard. It is trusting that he is still working, even when we cannot see it. When we cultivate a heart of gratitude, we begin to see God’s hand in places we might have otherwise overlooked. We recognize his provision, his protection, and his presence in our daily lives. Gratitude also guards our hearts against negativity and bitterness. When we focus only on what is wrong, it is easy to become discouraged. But when we intentionally give thanks, we invite joy into our lives. So I encourage you to take a moment today and reflect. What are you thankful for? Not just the big things, but the small, everyday blessings. The breath in your lungs, the people in your life, the ways God has sustained you.

Gratitude is not just a feeling—it is a discipline. The more we practice it, the more natural it becomes. Let us be people who choose gratitude, not just when it is easy, but especially when it is hard. In doing so, we will begin to see our lives through the lens of God’s goodness.
