There is something in us that wants to see the whole picture. We want clarity about where we are going, how things will unfold, and what the outcome will be. It gives us a sense of security to know what lies ahead. But often, God doesn’t reveal the entire path. Instead, he gives us the next step. Psalm 119, verse 105 says:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Notice what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t say a floodlight for the entire journey. It says a lamp for your feet—a light for where you are right now. God’s guidance is often given one step at a time. This can feel uncomfortable. We may wish for more information, more certainty, more direction. But walking with God is not about having all the answers—it is about trusting him with each step. There may be times when you feel unsure about what comes next. When the future feels unclear and the path ahead seems uncertain. In those moments, it can be tempting to wait until everything makes sense before moving forward. But faith doesn’t always work that way. Faith moves when God speaks, even if the full picture isn’t visible. Think about how often God led people in Scripture this way. Abraham was called to go without knowing exactly where he was going. The Israelites were led through the wilderness one day at a time. Even the disciples followed Jesus without fully understanding what lay ahead. God is not trying to confuse us—he is teaching us to trust him. If we had the entire plan laid out before us, we might rely more on the plan than on God. But when we take one step at a time, we remain dependent on him. There is also peace in this way of walking. Instead of carrying the weight of the entire future, we are invited to focus on what God is asking of us today. What is the next step of obedience? The next step of trust? The next step of faith? So I encourage you, if you are feeling overwhelmed by the unknown, shift your focus. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You only need to take the next step.

God’s guidance is faithful, even when it is gradual. When we trust him one step at a time, we begin to see that he is leading us exactly where we need to go. Let us walk forward in faith, not needing to see the whole path, but trusting the one who is lighting the way.
