When life is calm, it is easy to feel steady. But when challenges arise—when uncertainty creeps in, when circumstances feel overwhelming—it becomes much harder to remain grounded. In those moments, what we focus on matters more than ever. It is natural to focus on the problem, to analyze it, worry about it, and try to control the outcome. But as believers, we are called to focus on something greater. In Matthew, chapter 14, verses 28 through 30, we see this truth played out through Peter:
“‘Lord, if it is you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’ ‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”
Peter did something incredible—he walked on water. But the moment he shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm, fear took over, and he began to sink. This is often our story as well. As long as our eyes are fixed on Jesus, we find strength, peace, and clarity. But when we shift our focus to our circumstances, fear begins to take hold. We begin to doubt, to worry, and to lose sight of what God is capable of doing. Keeping our eyes on Jesus does not mean that the storm disappears. It means that we trust him in the middle of it. So I encourage you, whatever you are facing today, resist the urge to focus solely on the problem. Instead, turn your attention to the one who is greater than the problem.

Faith is sustained by focus. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we rise above the waves. When we fix our eyes on the storm, we begin to sink. Let us choose to keep our eyes on him, trusting that he is able to carry us through.
