The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude has the power to transform the way we see our lives. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, from what is wrong to what God is doing right in front of us. It is easy to be thankful when things are going well. When prayers are answered and life feels stable, gratitude comes naturally. But what about when life is difficult? What about when things don’t go as planned? Scripture challenges us with this perspective in 1 Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 18:

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Notice that it does not say to give thanks for all circumstances, but in all circumstances. That means even in hardship, even in uncertainty, even in pain—we are called to be thankful. Gratitude in difficult seasons is an act of faith. It is choosing to believe that God is still good, even when life is hard. It is trusting that he is still working, even when we cannot see it. When we cultivate a heart of gratitude, we begin to see God’s hand in places we might have otherwise overlooked. We recognize his provision, his protection, and his presence in our daily lives. Gratitude also guards our hearts against negativity and bitterness. When we focus only on what is wrong, it is easy to become discouraged. But when we intentionally give thanks, we invite joy into our lives. So I encourage you to take a moment today and reflect. What are you thankful for? Not just the big things, but the small, everyday blessings. The breath in your lungs, the people in your life, the ways God has sustained you.

Gratitude is not just a feeling—it is a discipline. The more we practice it, the more natural it becomes. Let us be people who choose gratitude, not just when it is easy, but especially when it is hard. In doing so, we will begin to see our lives through the lens of God’s goodness.

Choose Forgiveness

Forgiveness is one of the most difficult things we are called to do. When someone hurts us, our natural response is to hold onto that pain, to protect ourselves, and sometimes even to seek justice. But God calls us to something different. In Ephesians, chapter 4, verse 32, we are told:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Forgiveness is not about saying that what happened was okay. It is about releasing the burden of that hurt and trusting God with it. Holding onto unforgiveness can weigh us down. It can affect our thoughts, our emotions, and our relationships. But when we choose to forgive, we experience freedom. Forgiveness is not always easy, and it may not happen overnight. But it is a choice we can make, again and again. So I encourage you to bring your hurt before God. Ask him to help you forgive, even when it feels impossible.

Forgiveness is not just for the other person—it is for you. When we release others, we free ourselves. Let us choose forgiveness, just as we have been forgiven.

Failure Exposed

There are moments in life when failure feels exposed. When mistakes are no longer private, when what we hoped to hide is suddenly visible—and the weight of it comes not just from what we’ve done, but from how others respond. The pressure. The judgment. The expectation of consequences. And in those moments, it can feel like there is no way forward. In the Gospel of John, there is a powerful moment where a woman is brought before Jesus, accused of adultery. The law is clear. The crowd is ready. They place her in front of Him and ask what should be done. But instead of answering immediately, Jesus does something unexpected. He kneels down and begins writing on the ground. No rush. No reaction. Just stillness. And then, in John chapter 8, verse 7, He speaks:

“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

This is significant. Because it shifts the focus. From accusation… To reflection. From judgment… To awareness. One by one, the crowd begins to leave. Starting with the oldest. Until no one remains. Just Jesus and the woman. And then He asks her: “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she replies. And Jesus responds: “Then neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.” This is not dismissal. It’s restoration with direction. He does not ignore what happened. But He refuses to define her by it. He removes the weight of condemnation—and replaces it with an invitation to change. This reveals something important. Grace does not deny truth. It makes transformation possible. We often assume that once something is exposed, the story is over. That failure defines the outcome. But Jesus shows us that exposure does not have to lead to destruction. It can lead to freedom if we are willing to receive it. The crowd wanted to close the story. Jesus opened it. Not by excusing—But by restoring.

You may feel like something in your life has been exposed—a mistake, a failure, something that carries weight and consequence. If that’s the case, I would encourage you to look at how Jesus responds. Not with condemnation— But with clarity and an invitation. Because you are not defined by the moment. You are not limited to what has happened. There is still a way forward. Not by ignoring the past—But by stepping into something new. And sometimes, the most powerful shift is not what others say about you—But what Jesus speaks over you. Because His words don’t just silence accusation… They create a path to move forward.

Changing Direction

There are times in life when we feel confident about where we are going. We make plans, set goals, and begin moving forward with a clear sense of direction. Everything seems to be falling into place. And then, something changes. A door closes unexpectedly. An opportunity disappears. A path we were certain about suddenly shifts. In those moments, it can be confusing—and even frustrating. We may ask ourselves, Why would God allow this? Why would he lead me this far, only to change the direction? But Scripture reminds us in Proverbs, chapter 16, verse 9:

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

God’s guidance is not always linear. There are times when what feels like a setback is actually a redirection. What looks like a closed door may be protection. What feels like a detour may be preparation. The challenge is that we often interpret change through the lens of disappointment rather than trust. We become attached to our plans. We envision how things should go. And when those plans are interrupted, it can feel like something has gone wrong. But God is not limited to our expectations. He sees what we cannot see. He knows what lies ahead. And his adjustments are not random—they are intentional. There may be times when God redirects you to something different than what you originally planned. A different opportunity. A different path. A different outcome. And while it may not make sense in the moment, it does not mean that you are off course. It may mean that you are exactly where God wants you to be. So I encourage you, if you are experiencing a change in direction, don’t resist it. Don’t assume that something has gone wrong. Instead, pause and seek God. Ask him what he is doing. Trust that his redirection has purpose.

God’s direction is always better than our own. Even when it changes, even when it surprises us, even when it challenges us. Let us trust him not just when the path is clear, but also when it shifts. Because the one who leads us is faithful, and his plans are always good.

When You Don't Understand

There are moments in life when things simply don’t make sense. Situations unfold in ways we didn’t expect. Prayers seem unanswered. Doors close without explanation. And we are left wondering why. In those moments, understanding feels important. We want clarity. We want answers. We want to make sense of what is happening around us. But faith does not always come with understanding. Proverbs, chapter 3, verse 5 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

This can be difficult. Because our natural instinct is to figure things out. To analyze, to reason, to connect the dots. But there are times when God calls us to trust him beyond what we can comprehend. God sees the full picture. He knows what is ahead. He understands the details that we cannot see. And while we may only see a small part of the story, he sees it all. There may be seasons when things feel confusing. When circumstances don’t align with what you hoped for or expected. When it feels like you are walking without clear direction. In those moments, trust becomes a choice. It is choosing to believe that God is good, even when life feels hard. It is choosing to believe that he is working, even when you cannot see it. It is choosing to believe that his plan is greater than your understanding. Trust does not eliminate questions—but it gives you a place to stand while you have them. You may not always understand why something is happening. But you can trust who is in control. So I encourage you, if you are facing something that doesn’t make sense, bring it to God. Be honest with him about your questions. But don’t let the absence of understanding shake your faith.

—-

Understanding may come later—or it may not come at all. But trust can exist even without it. When we choose to trust God, we anchor ourselves in his character, not our circumstances. Let us trust him fully, even when we don’t understand, knowing that he is always working for our good.
